New Acute Medical Unit

PHd worked with Kier Construction to design and deliver a new Acute Medical Unit over a total period of just 12 weeks. This emergency capacity expansion provided Worcestershire Royal Hospital A&E department with an additional 29-bed spaces to support strained clinical services during periods of high demand.

An existing vacant area within the Hospital was available to be utilised to house the new facility, which includes a 14 bed and 15 bed ward, along with an array of supporting sanitary and staff accommodation. Extensive new services and plant installations were also required for the scheme.

The urgent requirement for the additional bed spaces meant that we had an incredibly constrained programme to work within. This presented significant challenges; in particular limited design time, logistics and materials lead times. The overall design was worked on and agreed during a single full day workshop with the contractor, consults and client onsite.

PHd and the rest of the design team worked very closely with the contractor and their supply chain in specififying materials and products that could be procured to suit the programme. Detaied design information was provided on a ‘just-in-time’ basis to suit the construction programme. Despite tight timescales and the challenges associated with such, the project was successfully completed on time.
