At Pinnegar Hayward Design, we recognise our role as architects and building consultants to enhance the health, well-being, and prosperity of the people and communities we serve.
Our commitment to social value spans our projects, external activities, partnerships, and our role as an employer, contributing positively to social, economic and environmental issues.
"At PHd, we are proud of our journey towards positive change and remain committed to making a lasting impact through our focus on social value and sustainability."
We are dedicated to fostering inclusive and accessible communities. By working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, we aim to create spaces where everyone feels heard, supported, and able to flourish. Our efforts extend to supporting local economies by boosting employment and investing in local suppliers. We also promote opportunities for disadvantaged groups, ensuring our projects help build inclusive communities.
We believe that wellness is as fundamental to the built environment as sustainability. Our projects are designed to support physical and mental well-being, advocating for healthy, responsible, and sustainable practices. This commitment is reflected in our support for health and mental health charities through fundraising and community involvement.
We champion equal rights to education and strive to inspire future generations. By providing better opportunities to those from disadvantaged backgrounds and promoting open knowledge exchange within our industry, we support the next generation of architects and designers. We offer mentoring, work experience placements, apprenticeships and career support to break down barriers and inspire people from diverse backgrounds.
We actively encourage diversity in our industry and invest in our people, providing equal opportunities for career progression and professional development. Our internal initiatives include training days, mentoring schemes, apprenticeships, internal Focus Groups for design reviews of live and student projects as well as a supportive working environment facilitated by Mental Health First Aiders and Wellbeing Champions.
Sustainability is at the heart of our practice. We deliver inclusive, sustainable, and flexible learning environments, shared spaces for community building, and champion affordable housing. Our work in the healthcare sector and the transformation of our built environment focuses on improving health and well-being, ensuring our projects contribute to a better future.
We engage with higher education institutions across the UK, providing mentoring, work experience, design workshops, and site visits. Some of our team serve as visiting lecturers, sharing their expertise on topics such as Inclusive Design. We also partner with local schools and colleges to encourage school age students into the construction industry via work experience and T-Level placements.
Our Wellbeing Champions and mental health first aiders provide support, guidance on managing stress and anxiety, and opportunities for team socialisation through various activities. These efforts create a positive and supportive work environment and are backed up by external providers and training.
We support the best interests of the communities we work with. Dedicating time to local projects, activities and charities. We hold bake sales, donate food to local food banks, socks and donations to local charities in place of Christmas cards. We also support the Architects Benevolent Society in their fundraising efforts, with one of our employees an Ambassador for the charity. We also support numerous grassroots sports teams and have invested thousands of pounds in sponsorship of kit and equipment in the past 10 years alone. This works hand in hand with initiatives for tree planting, where we recently sponsored a tree planting programme for a local council to aid their parks programme.
Our team often attends events, networking evenings and workshops in the city. Ranging from talks, lectures, galas or charity nights, to quizzes, sporting events, and crafty workshops like wreath-making or photography. And sometimes, we don’t even need an excuse to socialise together outside of the office either! Several of our staff are actively involved in groups such as the Birmingham Architectural Association and the RIBA Midlands chapter, hosting events and further supporting the industry.
