RJAH is an Orthopaedic Hospital in Gobowen, Shropshire, has a deep-rooted history with the military, dating back to its founding by a surgeon and nurse in the early 20th century. To continue this proud legacy, the hospital launched the Veterans Orthopaedic Service, a specialised program offering clinical treatment and mental health support designed for veterans.
PHd was honoured to be chosen as the Architect and Lead Consultant for this significant project. During the challenging times of the 2020 pandemic, we adapted by hosting a series of virtual workshops via Microsoft Teams. These sessions brought together clinicians, military liaison officers, hospital staff, and the design team to ensure that the project met the needs of all stakeholders.
To make this vision a reality, the Trust explored two versions of the project: a reduced plan and a comprehensive scheme. Thanks to the generous support of the Headley Court Charity, the full version—which includes a Veterans Hub and advanced treatment facilities—was fully funded.
Despite global material shortages and logistical challenges, PHd guided the project through value engineering and alternative solutions, ensuring the building met NHS standards. The Veterans Orthopaedic Centre officially opened in April 2023, with HRH the Duchess of Edinburgh attending the ceremony. The centre has since been praised by staff and patients, marking a new chapter in RJAH’s commitment to serving those who have served.
