Sustainability

At PHd, we are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our projects through thoughtful and sustainable design practices.

We believe that the choices made early in the design process have a profound influence on the overall sustainability of a project. This is a built-in part of our architectural service but is also an area where we can offer standalone advice to support our clients, particularly in retrofit design and upgrades.

Our method

Early-stage impact review

Guide clients in making decisions that lessen the environmental impact of their projects, including advice on spatial design, materials selection, and the integration of sustainable practices.

Lifecycle carbon assessments

Conduct building lifecycle carbon assessments to inform design decisions, ensuring each choice contributes to a reduced carbon footprint.

RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge

Providing annual environmental data for our projects to help drive industry standards forward.

Sustainable design practices

We have successfully delivered numerous projects that incorporate sustainable materials, renewable energy sources, biophilic design, and carbon neutrality.

Our approach includes:

Continual Design Review

Making key environmental decisions at the earliest stages to benefit both the environment and our clients.

Retrofitting and reuse

Given that around 80% of the buildings expected in 2050 already exist today, we prioritise retrofitting over demolition. Retrofitting not only reduces carbon emissions but also preserves the architectural heritage and enhances the value of existing buildings.

Passivhaus principles

Using Passivhaus methods for low-energy building design to future-proof our projects against regulatory changes and optimise performance.

BREEAM

Utilising assessment tools like BREEAM to ensure holistic sustainability solutions are measured, recorded and delivered where appropriate for our clients.

Leadership and innovation

Our dedicated sustainability group and internal champions ensure that we stay at the forefront of sustainable design. We continually explore innovative technologies, materials, and design approaches, fostering debate and collaboration with communities and colleagues.

Our priority

We recognise the urgency of the climate emergency and strive to advance our sustainability efforts. Our sensitive design interventions have transformed many ageing and underperforming buildings, reducing carbon emissions and creating inspiring spaces. Our consistent, analysis-rooted approach delivers efficient, practical solutions tailored to maximise environmental and economic benefits.
