Phase Out of Dormitories at Elgar Unit, Newtown Hospital

PHd was commissioned by the Trust to design and deliver an £11m development, aiming to eliminate shared bedroom accommodation in the Holt and Athelon Inpatient Mental Health Wards, following a Care Quality Commission (CQC) directive. The project, completed in two phases, involved demolishing and reconstructing both wards to provide 30 new single bedrooms with en-suite facilities, adhering to P23 ‘repeatable rooms’ standardisation.

The design focused on maximising thermal efficiency, with upgraded MEP services throughout. New gardens and outdoor activity spaces were also created to promote therapeutic health and well-being for patients and staff, while enhancing local biodiversity. The scheme achieved a BREEAM Very Good rating.

The new facilities significantly improved privacy and dignity for service users, a key CQC goal, while maintaining stringent safety and security measures through the latest systems and technologies to assist staff in managing the wards.
