Elgar Unit ECT Suite Reorganisation

The Grafton ECT Suite was formerly located in the Elgar Unit, which had several deficiencies, particularly in the size of patient preparation and recovery areas and staff supervision arrangements. Patient privacy was compromised because the pre-and post-treatment waiting areas were separated from the main treatment area by a public corridor.

To address these issues and retain ECTAS accreditation, the Grafton Suite was relocated to the Aconbury North building. The new suite provides improved patient flows from waiting through preparation, treatment, recovery, and discharge, ensuring patient privacy throughout the process. Enhanced staff office facilities allow direct visual observation of the recovery area, improving supervision and care quality. This relocation not only addresses previous deficiencies but also creates a more efficient, patient-centered environment that upholds high standards of care and privacy.

As the Aconbury North location, previously accommodate medical record storage, there was no existing medical gas or ventilation provision. A new medical gas store had to be constructed adjacent to Aconbury North and new air handling equipment situated on the roof to ensure ventilation in compliance with NHS technical standards.

"I would like to express my sincere thanks for all of your hard work and efforts in its development. It is even better than we envisaged and we really are over the moon. It was so lovely to be involved in the design process and be consulted every step of the way. From my point of view, it meant a great deal for me to be able to work with the team to get things just right and I think we have achieved it. Thank you for putting up with my many requests and being so accommodating. The new suite looks just stunning and I will feel immensely proud to welcome in our first patients and staff on Monday."
