New Crisis Assessment Suite, Newtown Hospital

The redesign of the entrance to the Crisis Assessment Unit at the Elgar Unit in Worcester focused on enhancing light and space while maintaining safety and security. The previous space was cramped with low ceilings and convoluted routes. Full-height glazing was added to the entrance wall, bringing in natural light and creating a fresh, welcoming atmosphere.

The building originally lacked a clear entrance, patient waiting area, and reception point. PHd addressed this by creating a modern reception counter that is both warm and secure, the first thing seen upon entry. The reception area, featuring bright colours with a white base, timber effects, and greenery, creates a warm, inviting space that reduces anxiety and calms visitors.

Inside, the ambience blends contemporary design with safety. Soft, clean fabrics complement the overall aesthetic, with patient areas refurbished with anti-ligature fixtures and outward-opening toilet doors to prevent emergencies.

Externally, the design features a geometrical, asymmetrical entrance canopy, hinting at the structure's modern design philosophy. The canopy is visible from the road and draws visitors in. Material choices blend with the existing building while boldly defining the main entrance. A controlled barrier linked to reception was installed to prevent non-permitted parking near the entrance, reserving the area for ambulance drop-offs and disabled parking only.
