King Edwards Design Centre

The new PHd designed facility supports the Edgbaston school’s plans for the delivery of GCSE Art, Design and Technology and GCSE Computing.

Nestled within a conservation area and sitting alongside the historic estate of the King Edwards High School buildings, this project aims to strike a delicate balance of bringing in a contemporary design to a historic setting whilst still largely using complementary materials. Whilst all the while remaining fully inclusive, pursuing environmentally friendly technologies and creating an exciting space within to inspire the learners.

The design includes a north lit double height gallery space within which has created an exciting space for the students to exhibit their work.

PHd endeavoured to make a sensitive yet unapologetically modern intervention to an existing 60s era building. Using contrasting bricks laid in playful bond patterns.

The design also had to overcome some other challenges including major temporary works to permit creation of retaining structures and propping existing roof whilst numerous existing structural walls removed, all whilst the school continued to operate day to day.

The competed project incorporated PVs to optimise the environmental potential of the existing building, as well as Brise soleil / solar shading.
