Technical Review of Heartlands Treatment Centre

University Hospitals Birmingham appointed PHd as Architectural Technical Advisor to the £40million HTC scheme at Heartlands Hospital designed by Design Buro.

As a trusted, critical friend, we helped guide the design and delivery process on behalf of the Client to ensure full compliance with all regulations, including Building Regulations, HBNs, HTMs and the Trust's standard specifications.

Our involvement was wide-ranging, monitoring the Contractor's Proposals, all post Contractor appointments and technical coordination.

Most notably, we were significantly involved with signage and wayfinding. We implemented dementia-friendly colour schemes for all finishes and Inclusive Design principles to make the scheme more accessible across the sizeable and complex building for patients and staff.

We assisted in areas including the fire strategy, acoustics, access control, and performance specifications for everything from wall protection and floor finishes to partitions, doors, ceilings, and lift installations.

The project's success has led to several follow-up appointments for PHd as Technical Advisors on behalf of UHB for larger schemes, including a new Elective Theatre hub at Solihull Hospital.
